Classroom Management

Tips on How to Manage an Overcrowded Classroom

A school isn’t just a place to learn, but it’s also a place where you have to learn how to deal with other people and do so in a way that respects everyone’s space. That sounds like an easy enough task, but when the classroom feels more like Grand Central Station than anything else, it can be tough.

Classroom management is the process by which a class teacher controls the students in a classroom. Classroom teaching is the process by which a class is taught. Students in a classroom are usually controlled by the class teacher.

Overcrowding is the result of two factors –

  • less-than-efficient seating arrangements
  • lack of an organized activity schedule

Let your students determine the seating arrangements. You can help them brainstorm where they should sit based on some of their characteristics. For example, if two or more students don’t get along well with one another, you might suggest that they sit farther apart from one another to minimize the potential for conflict.

Or, if you have several extra students who aren’t working with small groups in your classroom and you want to give them more opportunities to practice their tasks independently (if your lesson plan calls for small groups), you may want to seat them near each other so that one person can help the other if needed.

Here are a few tips on how you can manage an overcrowded classroom

  • Choosing the Right Number of Students to Teach a Topic

As a teacher, it’s important to teach each student in your classroom how to be successful. Each child is different, and thus there is no one size that fits all teaching methods. Choosing the right number of students to teach a topic will determine how much attention the entire class can get.

If everyone participates throughout the whole lesson, then more children can be reached, and everyone will be able to learn more about a specific subject. Choosing a smaller number of students can also be beneficial. By teaching a smaller group, the teacher will have more time to address everyone and may even be able to complete more face-to-face teaching techniques.

  • Choosing the Right Number of Subjects

One thing that can cause an overflow of children in the classroom is the fact that there are too many subjects being taught at once. For example, if a student wants to take Spanish, then there are other options such as French or German that could provide them with better learning opportunities.

The best way for teachers to choose the right number of subjects is to make sure they know what each student is interested in learning and then choose something they may not have taken before. Also, there may be certain subjects that are more highly beneficial than other subjects. For example, drama is a great subject to teach because it helps improve speaking and writing skills as well as being able to act in front of an audience.

  • Choosing the Right Way to Organize

When it comes to organizing a classroom or deciding what is going on during the day for students, you will have a much easier time if you pick the right organization for each class. Choose an organization that fits into your classroom’s needs for each student and works with the amount of time in your class.

An important tip when deciding how large or small an organization should be is to never choose too large or too big of one. Choosing too large of an organization, such as choosing a whole day to discuss the life cycle of a frog and finding out what the different parts are, or reading through the entire Magic Tree House series will be a lesson that takes up time and energy in your classroom.

By choosing to meet with small groups and have them work together to complete assignments, students will be able to learn more about the material being taught and also have more time for hands-on learning instead of sitting through lecture after lecture. Teachers should make sure that they also choose a good organizational method that fits into their daily schedule as well as their behavior management plan.

A teacher’s classroom should be organized and ready to go, but it is also important to let students know that they are in control. Once your room is set up, and all of the supplies are in place, sit down with the students and explain a few basic classroom rules. The first is that they should arrive on time.

The second is that you expect them to work on each assignment just like they are supposed to do at home. The third thing to explain is that they won’t be moved from their seat (except in the case of an emergency) and that the teacher will help them if they need it.

These three simple rules create a sense of order in your classroom and allow students to judge for themselves how to behave. And in most cases, students will follow the rules because once class starts, it’s too late for them not to participate. Whether you have a small, medium, or large classroom, a little preparation ahead of time can make everything run smoothly when it’s time for school to start. But in the online classes to manage it teachers can build their own app with the help of Classplus and they can even sell their own courses and generate revenue.
