Some of the tricks to teach Film Appreciation to college students are as follows:

Students need to be able to perceive and analyze images in order to be able to function in modern society because we are continuously surrounded by visual images of all kinds in today’s environment. This model and the supporting strategies were brought to a junior high school in Taipei City, Taiwan, where the researcher collaborated with the school’s art teachers to jointly implement action research and develop a model and strategies suitable for the teaching of film appreciation after the researcher had previously developed a model and strategies for teaching film appreciation through teaching practice at the university level but had been unable to find a model that worked well.

Therefore, the current study had two goals:

  • 1. Examining the learning outcomes of college students who were taught film appreciation using this model.
  • 2. Developing a teaching model and teaching strategies appropriate for the teaching of film appreciation at the junior high school level and exploring the factors affecting film appreciation teaching at this level.

In order to gather information and assess the teachings and film appreciation of the art teachers participating in the case study, the study makes use of in-class observations, interviews, and documentary analysis (including examination of reflective diaries, learning sheets, and feedback form), etc.

According to the study, the three “layers” of the film appreciation teaching model—getting students to describe the content of the film based on their immediate reactions to it, analyzing the form, and evaluating and reflecting as a viewer helped students move from merely appreciating films to being able to appreciate them. This was especially true at the junior high school level.

Different teaching methods for film appreciation

A variety of teaching techniques were used, such as questioning students, asking them for examples, encouraging them to draw comparisons, using still images, having discussions, etc. These varied teaching techniques helped to enrich the instruction and make the classes more approachable and enjoyable for the students. Unfortunately, interruptions from other school events and the teacher’s lack of specialist knowledge in this area had a negative impact on the overall quality of the instruction.

Although it will take developing additional teaching strategies for them to provide an in-depth explanation of the meaning of a film appreciation main theme, their ability to make formal analysis depends on the teachers’ specialist knowledge. The students who had been taught using this film appreciation education model were nevertheless able to: describe film plots (in terms of how the film begins, develops, and ends); explain the meaning of a film’s main theme; perform a rough analysis of the major themes in a film; and evaluate the quality of the students enjoyed learning from the movies and believed that this method of teaching was beneficial since it inspired them to alter the way they thought and behaved.
