Online Teaching

6 Tips to increase participation in your online course

Following the covid19 outbreak, the significance of online courses has shifted dramatically. The world has embraced the online education system today. As a result, the online courses have received a favorable response. However, students’ participation remains low because they may not accept the online education system. It may take time to change, but here are six steps you can take to increase student participation in online courses.

Set a course goal and learning outcome

You should not begin without having a goal in mind for your online course. That should be your initial step. Being clear about your objectives will help you stay focused and better plan and implement a triumphant teaching moment.

Create new learning objectives regularly to give you a better sense of purpose and direction. Then, take your time and write down precisely what you want your students to learn from it. Always keep in mind what your students expect from your online class. Keep in mind that you provide online distance learning, so face-to-face interaction should always be available.

Ask a few questions before starting:

  • How will the students interact with you?
  • What will your online course teach the student?
  • Result of your online class
  • What platform will you use to deliver your online system?
Course Content Syllabus

Creating a clear online course syllabus that tells students what the course is all about can assist students in being prepared. Develop the lesson plan such that students are engaged during the online class.

  • There should be off-topic conversions in between:

It shouldn’t be all about studying. There should be time for off-topic or personal conversations that will assist students in developing positive relationships with you. This also encourages and motivates students to continue their education.

  • Guest teacher:

You can intersperse guest lectures to provide variety in the online class and keep students motivated to attend the online courses.

  • Video on:

Keeping the camera on during the lecture can help the teacher and the students stay engaged.

  • Task:

Giving tasks or assignments in between classes also helps to maintain student participation. This also demonstrates the student’s interest in your subject or the online lecture.

  • Focus on quality, not quantity:

The teacher’s emphasis should be on the quality of the content rather than the quantity. The lecture should not be so long that students become bored. Instead, add short video clips and other content to encourage interaction.

Reward or Certification

Be innovative and keep students informed about the special award to be as interactive as possible.

Keeping a prize or awarding a certificate after online class/course competitions attracts more students and keeps them engaged, regardless of whether your students are adults or children. Students with goals will also pay attention because they will be given a certificate at the end of the online course.

There are also several simple ways to recognize and reward your students:

  • Give them a gift voucher or gift card.
  • Plan a fun activity.
  • Delivering a live lecture.
Discussions and Feedback

Course content and learning objectives must be supplemented with discussions. The teacher must ensure that constructive debate occurs. Topics and questions for conversation must be linked to the syllabus. Discussion participation should be made mandatory. Have a space for discussion and feedback during the course or on social media.

Feedback is an excellent option for an online class and valuable addition to the online education system. It aids in the improvement of the curriculum and learning materials. According to the researcher, receiving feedback benefited both students and educators.

Social Relationships

Initially, you want your online class to increase student participation and, as a result, your visibility as a teacher.

Having a social life is essential. It assists you in developing social relationships with the students. Communicating with students on social media allows the teacher to stay in touch with them. Social media is a highly effective tool for enhancing student engagement.

You can also create a Facebook page or group to stay in touch with your students and build a community.

Choosing the right platform

You must decide on a learning management system. First, you should be familiar with it. That makes it simple for you to deliver online courses. The platform you select should include all of the tools you require while presenting a class. Several outlets are available, but classplus is far superior to any other option. To know about it, check out the link.

Students have shown increased engagement and motivation toward e-learning. Many services are available through online learning platforms. There must be a concerted effort to provide this structure, going beyond simply replicating a physical class/lecture through video capabilities and utilizing various collaboration tools and engagement methods.
