Qualities of teacher

Things Teachers Should Never Say or Do

Teachers are not always perfect; things like making mistakes and occasionally exercising poor judgment happens in the classroom. As simple human beings, they sometimes become overwhelmed or lose focus. Sometimes they forget the purpose for which they are committed to their profession. As a result, teachers err from time to time, and it’s human nature.

Though it is human nature to make errors as a responsible human being in such a noble profession, there are certain things that a teacher should never say or do. Teachers’ words and actions play a decisive role in developing children’s nature and being their role models. Therefore, teachers should be responsible and never let any negative impact their way of teaching during their classroom teaching.

Here we have discussed a few important things that a teacher should never do or say in front of the students.

Five things teachers should never say

“Although the tongue has no bones, it can break hearts”

This phrase is accurate in every sense as words can wound, and thoughtful comments from a teacher can be a lifetime hateful memory for a student. In fact, due to such terms or sudden impact, students can despise the teacher for their whole life. Watch out for those common phrases you might stop using as a teacher:

“You will never be able to do that”

The teacher is a role model of positiveness, and no student wants to hear ‘no’ from a teacher. They look forward to positive words from the teacher to walk on in life. When a teacher becomes impatient and says, “you will never be able to do that to a student, it minimizes the progress, and a student’s progress becomes stagnant. Teachers should avoid using such negative words anytime in life.

“That’s a stupid question”

Students are always curious, and they ask a lot of questions. Asking questions is a good sign, but sometimes they might not make sense to the teacher as the students are still learning the basics, so there can be several questions in their minds. Teachers should always be positive in answering students’ questions related to the lesson or content taught in the class. Students must feel comfortable and motivated to ask questions to the teacher confidently.

When a teacher refuses to answer the question or shows discouragement to a question and says the question is stupid, a student feels terrible, and the entire class withholds asking questions. Yet, questions are essential, and they develop the betterment of learning. It also provides direct feedback to the teachers on whether the student understands the materials.

“I am disappointed in you”

A student can take more time to understand content as the learning pace is different for everyone. Discouraging words like ‘I am disappointed in you from a teacher is like a sharp razor for any student. It can break the child’s heart, and he might lose confidence. Always be positive and keep patience with children.

“Who do you think you are?”

Teachers sometimes pass the boundary and limitation of being rude. Their self-ego arises, and they scold a student with or without intention. Ask yourselves, ‘do you need to know who they are?’ This question means, “you are not important to me.” The communication shows arrogance and powerplay, so it should be avoided.

“I am busy now”

Students always need support from their teachers and want positive remarks from them. Do not be rude and say,” I am busy now,” as this implies, you are disturbing me. Rather be polite and ask for time so they can feel that you want to know what’s in their mind, but you enjoy free time to listen to their statement.

Five things teachers should never do

It is understandable if teachers lose their temper and patience once or twice a year. But it is unacceptable if he does things that are not right now and then. Therefore, teachers should avoid a few things discussed below to avoid unavoidable circumstances:

Comparing one kid with other

If a teacher makes a comparison between kids, it can hurt the student silently. Students can easily detect with whom the teacher is comparing and become more aware of the fact of comparison, which has an immensely negative effect. Instead of comparing if the teacher should focus on how bringing the particular kid on track can be helpful.

Teachers should not play favorites and select nepotism

It is a foul habit of some teachers to choose favorites in a class. Favoritism and nepotism are critical things that a teacher should never do. It can produce a negative effect on the remaining students. The teacher’s pet sometimes gets rejected by the students, same as they get left by the teachers for one student.

Not being flexible – making everything compulsory

Teachers should not make everything related to sports or communication compulsory within the class. Instead, they can keep several choices so that students, according to their interests, can select and be creative.

Ridiculing a student in front of the class

good teacher never mocks a student in front of everyone in the class. It can lead to loneliness and a resentful mind for the affected student. The student can bunk school and eventually lose interest in studies. To protect the self-esteem of a student is the duty of any teacher.

Giving discouraging remarks on a report card

teacher cannot expect perfection among the students. In a report card, teachers should write positive words and improvements rather than negative words. It is a classroom technique to keep students focused, productive and attentive in class.
